Sure you've got the pretty designs and the fancy pictures that you got from free Wordpress themes, but there are some other things you need to look at when designing a website' the technical elements. This includes how long it takes to load a page, screen resolution, cross browser compatibility, and readability.

You need to make sure the website can load quickly, especially in these times when everyone wants things faster. If it takes too long to load pages, then users will get impatient and probably go else where for information. If it takes longer than 10 seconds to load on an average modem connection, then you should shorten it.  What's the reason why it's taking so long to download? You might have too many design elements or big files. Remove these to help with the download time.

When you design, you also want to be aware of screen resolutions. Not everyone uses high screen resolution computers. So you will need to make sure that you design your web page as a percentage, not as an absolute pixel value. This will make it so your page will look the same on any screen resolution.

Be sure to cater to different browsers with your web design. Cross browser compatibility is nice since not everyone uses the same one. Popular browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Chrome. You can check for compatibility by going to all the browsers to see what your webpage looks like and adjust it according. There is also computer software that will automatically do this for you.

Your website may look pretty, but if a person can't read it, they won't care for it. Be sure to use fonts that are easy to read. One font may be fancier design-wise, but you need to keep the reader in mind when choosing fonts. Also, be aware of colors for the background. Black and white may not be that original, but it is the easiest colors to look at for a font color and background. The most popular font is the Verdana font as it was designed specifically for the web.
